If you’re dreaming of an intimate, nature-filled elopement, a San Juan Mountains elopement might just be the perfect choice. Tucked away in the breathtaking landscape of southwest Colorado, this range combines epic scenery, rugged peaks, and an unmatched sense of peace. Whether you’re hiking to a turquoise alpine lake or exchanging vows at a hidden gem only accessible by Jeep, the San Juans are full of unforgettable spots to say “I do.”

Why Choose a San Juan Mountains Elopement?

Unlike the more trafficked areas of Colorado, like Rocky Mountain National Park, the San Juan Mountains are a quieter, more secluded option. However, the views here are just as — if not more — stunning. This makes them the perfect location for an intimate elopement, especially if you want to combine adventure with beauty.

Another reason couples love eloping here? No permits required. That’s right — you can plan your dream elopement ceremony without the added stress of applying for national park permissions.

Additionally, Colorado allows you to self-solemnize, meaning you don’t need an officiant to make it official. The process to get your marriage license is also simple, so what are you waiting for? Let’s get you married in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains!

A Photographer Who Knows These Mountains

I’ve spent summers in the San Juan Mountains since I was a kid, staying with family friends who live at the base of this incredible range. Over the years, I’ve hiked dozens of trails, scouted countless locations, and also worked with amazing local vendors. That experience means I can help guide you every step of the way — whether it’s your elopement day timeline, picking the best Jeep tour, or finding the coziest Airbnb nearby.

Best Time of Year for a San Juan Mountains Elopement

Timing can make a big difference when planning a San Juan Mountains elopement. Many of my favorite spots become accessible in late June or early July, depending on snow levels. From then until October, you’ll find a wide variety of epic scenery. Already have a wedding date? Then, check out this season-by-season breakdown of how the vibe of these mountains changes throughout the year.

July & August Elopements:

July and August are the best months to catch the wildflowers in full bloom.

September San Juan Mountains Elopements:

Although temperatures begin to cool and crowds start to thin, September still offers a great shoulder season for your elopement.

Late Sept–Early Oct Wedding Dates:

Late September through early October is ideal for fall foliage — especially if you’re dreaming of golden aspens.

Eloping in the Winter Months (Jan–Feb):

Because snow blankets the area in January and February, these winter months are perfect for a cozy, town-based elopement.

My Top 5 Favorite Locations to Photograph San Juan Mountains Elopements

Below are five of my absolute favorite locations for a San Juan Mountains elopement. From easily accessible alpine lakes to rugged, off-the-map gems, these spots each offer something special. However, two of the locations listed here are what I like to call my “hidden gems” — places I rarely see other photographers use. In order to protect their magic and keep them as untouched as possible, I won’t share their exact names publicly. When we work together, though, I’ll provide all the detailed info you’ll need to get there!

1. Blue Lakes Trail | Ridgway

If you’re looking for gorgeous views and don’t mind a workout, the Blue Lakes Trail is a dream. This hike features three iconic alpine lakes with water so turquoise it looks like it belongs in the Alps. While the trail is challenging, the reward is beyond worth it. Throughout the hike, you’ll find multiple open areas that work beautifully for both portraits and small ceremonies.

2. My Favorite Hidden Lake | Silverton

This tucked-away alpine lake is surrounded by towering evergreens and rugged peaks. The final stretch of the drive requires a Jeep, but the journey is more than worth it. One of my couples chose this lake for their private vow exchange, and it couldn’t have been more peaceful. With space for a small group and seriously amazing views, this hidden spot is one of my most treasured recommendations.

3. Little Molas Lake | Silverton

Need something easily accessible? Little Molas Lake is ideal for larger ceremonies. It’s just a one-minute walk from the parking area and has a flat open space that works well for setups with chairs. Because it’s more trafficked, I typically recommend this for your main elopement ceremony rather than private vows.

4. A Secret San Juan Mountains Elopement Location | Ouray

Out of all the breathtaking locations I’ve explored, this one might take the cake. From a turquoise glacial lake to wildflower meadows, aspen groves, and even a waterfall, it feels like five destinations in one. Accessible only via a rugged Jeep road, I usually suggest hiring a local Jeep tour to take us up. This is the kind of place that will truly take your breath away — and it’s one I only share with my couples.

5. Alta Lakes | Telluride

Just 40 minutes outside Telluride, this area includes several beautiful mountains and lakes with plenty of secret spots for portraits or vows. A 4×4 is highly recommended for the drive. One unique option is renting Alta Lakes Observatory as your venue and home base — offering both a scenic ceremony space and cozy accommodations.

What to Do Around Your San Juan Mountains Elopement

One of the best parts about this region is how much there is to do. Think horseback rides through national forests, relaxing evenings in hot springs, or ATV rides through road trails. Your elopement day can be part wedding, part unforgettable vacation.

Tips for an Incredible Adventure Elopement

  • Bring layers — the weather can shift fast in the mountains.
  • Book early for peak wildflower and fall foliage seasons.
  • Opt for weekday elopements to avoid popular spots being too crowded.
  • Embrace the dirt roads and muddy boots. It’s all part of the adventure!
